Err, Happy Independence Day?

My parents have NEVER bullshitted me. They always say it like it is. Especially my mum who is quite the vocal activist, I must say.

Yesterday was our 63rd Independence Day so emotions were running high, patriotic songs were playing … you know how it gets. My sis and I were having a heated argument about freedom. Being women in India, you get the general drift of the conversation.

So mum pops in and pops out and this is what she says.

Freedom is like a cow tethered to a post. The only thing that changes is the length of rope!

Is it any wonder that I am who I am?

And the rope is probably our duties…or our values or simply guilt or fear…! But she’s right!
