As someone who’s had her name mispronounced and anglicised in some pretty crazy ways (Andrew, anyone?), I hold my name with pride – knowing it captures who I am perfectly. I grew up wishing I’d have a more western name, as most of us from the colonies did back then. And then I learnt its history, its meaning, and I fell in love with it. There isn’t a parent’s surname attached to mine, there will be no spousal or family name. My parents wanted me to be truly and authentically myself without forcing their identities and histories on me. And so, I have two names that are uniquely and 100% mine. I wear it with pride and I draw my confidence from it. This playlist is my homage to names – they are magic and they have power, and I love them madly!
As part of my new mixtapes project, I have asked select friends to curate playlists for me. Every now and then, I’ll pop a playlist that is attached to a memory or a concept very near and dear to me. This is just one of them.
